Hiking offer 2025

When you walk in nature, everything starts to flow more. Your thoughts, your state of mind; everything feels lighter. In recent years I walked 4,600 km across Spain. That's how I took this country more and more into my heart.

From Extremadura I organize alternating day hikes. Small-scale and for everyone who is on vacation or passing through. The starting point: a day's walk can make all the difference. The attractive flora and fauna of Extremadura plus my experiences as a hiking expert for Espanje Magazine form the basis. No fuss, just a few hours into nature with a Dutch local who knows his way around.

Extremadura day walks

The hiking offer currently changes and unfolds around the medieval cities of Cáceres and Trujillo.  From May to September and in January there are no hikes.

Cáceres - rural
vistas

In Cáceres begins the Camino de los Descubridores, a reference to the conquistadores who, before or after leaving for the New World made pilgrimages to the Monastery of Guadalupe. From this trail we walk a variation of the first stage, to Sierra de Fuentes. Through olive groves, a stone quarry and grasslands full of cork oaks, we reach Sierra de Fuentes. On the way back, we climb the crest of the hill to the Santuario de la Virgen de la Montaña, where the wide open spaces are felt.

Cáceres - hermitage and mining

For enthusiasts. A route that shows a different side of Cáceres. Along the southern frayed edges of the city unrolls a varied alternative to the picturesque landscape. We walk via Aldea Moret to the Ermita de Santa Lucía located on a hillside. Then we continue our route over a hillside past the remains of where the mining industry of Cáceres once flourished. Through the desolate grounds of the Feria we return to the starting point in the center. Raw, industrial and just a little bit different.

Trujillo - the plain to Madroñera

From charming Trujillo, we walk a stage of the Camino de los Descubridores. For the first few kilometres, the road turns gently right into a landscape of meadows dotted with huge granite boulders, where retinta cattle graze. This walk is characterised by straights, gentle curves and the vastness of the landschape. We end in Madroñera where the nobles of Trujillo had their summer residences. A car will take us back to the starting point. A walk to experience space
and way to ground.

Santa Cruz - a
sacred mountain

Already a sacred site in prehistoric times, montaña Sagrada has been a National Archaeological Monument since 1931. From Santa Cruz de la Sierra, we hike to the top, past remains of altars and offerings erected by the Visigoths, Moors and Christians. On the 844-metre-high Pico de San Gregorio, we see the ruins of the Arab fortress Sant Aqrug, also the habitat of the mighty cinereous vulture. The view from this spot is impressive. We finish again in Santa Cruz. The total climb is 396 metres.

In the media

For the Dutch Espanje Magazine, I write about long-distance walks in Spain on an ongoing basis.  I also published a non-fiction book with portraits of pilgrims on their way to
 Santiago de Compostela.
